Restaurants are really tough to navigate from a Ray Peat perspective, which is why he never went to one and had not in decades. I am visiting them less nowadays and when I do go it is a lot of weighing the pros and cons. Firstly I don’t eat meat in the evenings because it ruins my sleep and even if I did it certainly wouldn’t be chicken or pork so that narrows my choices. The beef in restaurants is hormone laden and fed corn and the seafood is generally bottom of the barrel farm raised and fed grains again so that narrows my choices even more. Salads are out because of the PUFA laden salad dressings and I don’t eat raw vegetables anyway. So when I am at a Thai restaurant, like last night, I have to narrow things down even more. Rice noodles are a better choice than the inorganic wheat noodles, which has been grown and finished with glycophate and other pesticides, but they fry those rice noodles in harmful polyunsaturated oils. It really gets tough to make a wise choice. Last night I decided to go with a mung bean glass noodle dish that is light in color indicating it has low to no soy sauce. This glass noodle dish is a favorite of mine called “Pad Woon Sen”. I failed to get a photo of it last night, but it has egg and mushrooms and I ordered mine last night without any meat. Knowing it was cooked in liquid oils I decided to take Ray Peat’s advice and pair it with a saturated fat to keep my body from storing those toxic polyunsaturated fats and ordered this purple yam ice cream. It was delicious.
The yams we see in our stores in America are not really yams. I have never seen a real yam, called Ube, in a store. The purple Frieda Stokes and purple Okinawa are sweet potatoes. Last night’s choices made me feel better than I usually do after a my Thai restaurant visits. Usually when I lie down to sleep after one my heart is racing. Usually milk and raw honey helps that, but last night I didn’t need either. I slept better than I usually do as well after a restaurant visit, but I did wake up at 4:30 so I got up drank some whole milk and ate a spoonful of raw honey and fell right back to sleep. Being mindful of my weight does not trump good health so my choices last night were based on my health and I really do feel like there will be less recovery time from that meal than my other ones. I don’t feel slugging or bloated today.
“Purple “yam” contains natural compounds, including anthocyanins and flavonoids, which have demonstrated anti-inflammatory effects. Scientific findings indicate that compounds help reduce inflammation in the body, which is associated with various health conditions, including arthritis, cardiovascular diseases, and certain cancers.
Good Source of Vitamins and Minerals
Purple yam is rich in essential vitamins and minerals that are beneficial for overall health. It contains significant amounts of vitamin C. Going by recent research, Vitamin C boosts the immune system and supports collagen production for healthy skin. Additionally, Ube provides potassium, manganese, and copper, which are important for proper nerve function, muscle contractions, and antioxidant enzyme systems.”
