A Bright Life Inspired by Dr. Raymond Peat
Tagged: gut health
I’ve had ongoing issues with my gut – it manifests as irregularity/constipation and a consistent phlegm build-up in the back of my throat. I call it a gut issue because Dr. Peat says gut irritation and inflammation can present as both.
The RP forum is rife with suggestions – from turpentine and oregano oil, to Dr. Peats favorites; carrot salad and flowers of Sulphur.
I have several of the above products, as well as some newly purchased doxycycline. I’m prepared to start low dose doxy with charcoal, maybe even the sulphur too. However, I’m asking here if anyone has resolved some gut issues with any of the aforementioned chemicals. I don’t mind trying and experimenting (done a lot of that), but I also like advice based on practical experience… and potential trials I’m not aware of.
Have you tried putting soil in capsules? I have had good results taking soil capsules from the garden.
Obviously not without risks but when I did it the die off was so intense I literally felt a burning sensation in my nostrils when I exhaled. Insane stuff. My gut is really a lot better now.
Thats just my crazy suggestion but scientists have been finding soil and gut bacteria ecosystems are VERY similar.
I have used cascara with a lot of success.
If you have never tried it, be warned: The first time using it you might go near liquid and being near a bathroom might be important. Though, thinking about, maybe reduce the capsule amount by half and see how that works. In a couple of days, the response to cascara quiets down.
I used cascara daily for years. Then I got to a point where I didn’t need it anymore. Healed gut perhaps? Then I ate some out-of-season melons from Central America and my gut got damaged again (that’s my theory, anyway). I’m back on an almost daily cascara. Rarely does it not work. And then I can usually trace a lack of BM to eating something indigestible the day before.
If you want to use food to heal your gut, I suggest eating beef or lamb broth or beef or lamb shank as often as possible.
I have not considered soil before questforjealth…I will look into it though.
I do take cascara now, probably 3 capsules every other day. It works! I just prefer not taking every day. Maybe I should though.
I remember reading that daily cascara is not harmful and may be beneficial. Though I may have latched on to that because it was what I wanted to hear.
I just ran across this Ray Peat clip that I have never heard before. It is about raw egg yolk being antiseptic to the gut. I use to be scared of raw eggs until I learned that the yolk is protected by germs like salmonella and that it is the whites that can have it…

I found this article about gut health when honey is added to yoghurt. I find that fascinating 🙂

Here is an e-mail I came across between Dr. Peat and myself…
ME: “I heard or read you saying somewhere that carrots can CAUSE headaches if one eats too many, am I remembering that right, and if so why would that be?”
RAY PEAT: “When a person has a sluggish intestine, too much fiber too soon can make it function worse.”
