I had to reassess my feeling that RFK Jr. was a Peat follower. I saw a clip a few days ago where he was saying, I paraphrase, “Sugar is poison, and its overconsumption is responsible for the diabetes epidemic.” Neither statement aligns with Peat.

The other day, Kennedy was talking about eliminating “petroleum-based food dyes.” I had never heard that term before. It’s seemed a good way to raise people’s awareness of bad ingredients. Sounds toxic! Reverse marketing.

@lilac I am having a bit of your uneasy feeling about him as well when he was talking positively about measle vaccinations.

@Lilac, I think RFK is on the right track for some things such as vaccines, ultra processed foods, and food additives. But he has been on the anti sugar wagon for quite a long time. In the Peat thought process even refined sugar is rated third, compared to ripe fruits and juices being most preferred.

The myth that sugar causes diabetes and metabolic syndrome is still taken as rock solid fact in many aspects of the alternative, as well as the mainstream media. It is rare that gluconeogenesis is ever mentioned let alone the free fatty acids being the primary energy source and poor energy production seen in excess glycolysis that is a hallmark of metabolic syndrome.

But we also need to remember that RFK now works inside the leviathan, so there may be certain land mines that he may not be able to navigate around with the truth. Also keeping in mind that there are lobbyists that fund the next campaign, leading to pressure from fellow elected representatives whose electorates may be impacted by these revelations and cause loss of jobs and economic stability for those areas.

@Lilac If you are paraphrasing, then you shouldn’t put something in quotes. Did RFK Jr. actually say “Sugar is poison,” or is that simply the impression you got?

Also, while Ray Peat talked very positively about sugar, he never recommended anybody “overconsume” it, so really, saying “don’t overconsume sugar” isn’t “Anti-Peat.” In some ways, it’s really meaningless. What is the objective level for “overconsumption” of sugar, anyways? 50 grams in a day? 400 grams? 3 pounds? 11 pounds? Even when Peat talked about the positive results Doctors Piory and Budd got in the 1800s by using 8-16oz of additional sugar a day, that was not a suggestion that everyone should add that amount to their diet.

@Cari Here’s a clip from Fox News titled “RFK Jr encourages Americans to get measles vaccine amid outbreak,” but listening past the headline, it doesn’t sound all that “positive” to me-

If you listen to the critical voices at MicroSoftNBC, they (correctly) point out that he only stated that people should consult with their doctors to understand their options around the MMR vaccine. And then, of course, proceeded to bash him for that-

Remember, Secretary Kennedy serves ALL of the American people, many of which are firm believers in vaccines of all sorts. This is clearly demonstrated by the numbers that show more than half of Americans opt for a yearly flu vaccine. While I would personally love to see Secretary Kennedy come out and expose the absolute fraud that is virology, while simultaneously banning all vaccines for so called “viral” diseases, and only even considering vaccines for conditions caused by provably real microorganisms like bacteria and fungi, the reality is that the overwhelming majority (probably in the area of 95%) believe in virology and that viruses are real, and not just the lab creations of virologists. So he would be widely ridiculed and dismissed, and such an action would probably force his resignation or firing. Or he might even pay the same price that John Magafuli did.

Secretary Kennedy has to walk a fine line, as the pharmaceutical companies exert a lot of power over the government, and the media. And most people aren’t ready for even parts of the truth. Having said all that, I think he has been doing a fantastic job, and I am not worried about recommendations that he kinda has to make, especially when they aren’t “full throated.”

I heard only a brief part of RFK’s sugar talk. Maybe he did get more nuanced at some point. But I definitely heard “sugar is poison.” He could have meant, but not expressed, the idea that genetically modified, glyphosate-soaked sugar is poison.

I am not overly worried about his vaccine words. I think he is generally Peat-aligned on vaccines but cannot say everything he feels at this point. And when I talk to my vaxed friends, generally logical people in most other aspects, I can understand why. Many (most?) of these types are dug in to their belief in the integrity of doctors and the efficacy of modern medicine. One friend who has many doubts about modern medicine (believing chemotherapy hastened her father’s death) is vaxed and has expressed to me no doubts about that. People still don’t seem ready for this truth.

Here is the talk. The link should come up at the quote:

I think that these conversations are to simplified in that they are only looking at dietary sugar intake and matching that with the symptom of high blood sugar associated with diabetes.
There is no separation of Type one diabetes and Type two diabetes which are two totally different conditions in their root causes.
I think that if the RFK wants to educate the public, talking about cortisol, would be a good start, but also distinguishing between a nutrient dense piece o ripe fruit or fresh squeezed fruit juice, and refined sugar would be a good place to start. He could then tie in the role that the seed oils play in the conversion of sugars to fat. As well as how the resulting chronic inflammation contributes to the condition.

As a caveat to my above statement I acknowledge that RFK may need to be brought up to speed on this issue. But it is progress nonetheless.

@Lilac, yep, that quote is pretty clear. While I clearly disagree with that at this point, there was a point, in my paleo days, where I pretty much agreed with that statement. Although, really, I hadn’t seen any studies to really back that statement up. I didn’t actually watch that Lustig presentation until after I had been following Peat’s ideas for a while, and realized the studies that Lustig used to “prove” his point were either very flimsy or completely out of context, and in no way backed up Lustig’s positions. So, Secretary Kennedy’s stance is not really surprising, although a bit disappointing.

Still, Secretary Kennedy seems open to actual research, and there is far more evidence to absolve sugar than to bash it. Sugar consumption was actually higher when RFK Jr. was a kid when diabetes was rare, so that right there should give pause. Humans have also been consuming sugar in large quantities for over a century, so it obviously isn’t an acute poison in even high daily amounts, and there is very weak evidence to suggest it’s a chronic poison. The things that have gone up drastically since RFK Jr. was a child was primarily high PUFA seed oils, and iron. Both are likely causal in diabetes. Anyway, with the team around RFK Jr, I’m sure he will modify his stance on sugar over time.

And also, I suggest again to Americans on this forum to write to Secretary Kennedy, and try and draw his attention to some of the issues and studies that show that sugar is either neutral or beneficial. Remember, the Secretary serves ALL Americans, and that would include you, so you have every right to write to any and all of your public servants. Again, just be respectful when doing so.

RFK is only human. He is not perfect but still a massive improvement. He seems into the bodybuilding thing, so I wouldn’t be surprised if he believes in a lowish-carb diet.

In today’s news, it looks like Florida will eliminate fluoride from the water supply, statewide!
