Interesting that you mention gut microbes Cari. I wonder if the gut adapts to our routines and diet over time and stepping out of the consistency and routine can hurt our digestion?? Like last night the red meat incident was really eye opening because I used to feel good eating red meat now after being vegan only for a few weeks it ruins me to eat meat now?
I guess if I was a meat eater and ate the starches I eat currently I would feel very depressed…? right??
hard to know if this is placebo or an actual effect of food? but then I watched a documentary about centenarians and a lot of them talk about how routine is important.

Knowing the many benefits of orange peels it was hard trying to find ways to eat them besides marmalade. Now I put them in my coffee, my sweet tea and in my milk. For the “Orange Creamsicle Milk” I mix one cup of milk with the zest of one ORGANIC orange, add in one tablespoon of sugar, one teaspoon of real vanilla extract and a pinch of salt. I let this sit overnight and OMG is this ever good!




This was an interesting post Cari. Have you any thoughts on whether probiotics are able to survive the highly acidic environment of a healthy persons stomach and allow the probiotics to enter the small intestine and make it to the colon where some have hypothesized a balanced gut flora determines the health of the individual on many fronts?
@J.R.L I have been reading a lot about gut health and I think that finding things that can survive the journey through the thirty-some feet of intestines to kill the bad bacteria is more important than what good is there. Even Ray Peat said a neutral gut is best. Yesterday I mashed up a whole head of raw garlic with about 6-tablespoons of grass-fed butter and added in lots of fresh grown basil and the zest of a lemon too. I ate about half of it myself raw on fresh-made sourdough and it was delicious medicine! Raw garlic can survive the intestinal journey and my extra ingredients have their own gut benefits. It was already half gone before I thought to take the second photo.


Are you thinking that there is a probiotic in these foods, or are you providing fiber and butyrate for the gut bacterium to consume, multiply and produce beneficial compounds to help seal the lining to prevent the release of endotoxin, or compounds such as oxytocin which promote glucose metabolism?
@J.R.L there are so many good reasons for eating raw garlic, here are a couple reasons why I am wanting to eat it.
