A Midwestern Doctor continues his report on DMSO. A substance that was discussed in great deal on the former Ray Peat Forum. Many complained of the garlic like odour which when used as a solvent for dissolving supplements for topical application was very useful since it would penetrate though the skin and into the bloodstream, bypassing the liver when supplied via the oral route.
What I was unaware of was the many medicinal attributes which DMSO has for treating numerous ailments, including but not limited to amyloidosis, as well as an early treatment for cranial infarctions, brain and spinal injuries, and many more conditions. Certainly worth a read if anyone suffers from any autoimmune conditions such as rheumatoid arthritis.

In terms of safety DMSO has been around since the late eighteen hundreds.

Thank you for all of this information @J.R.L I will pass it on to my friend. Do you have any other good information on ALS?

@Cari the one common theme in Dr Peats work is how dangerous PUFA is and should be minimized as much as possible. This would possibly benefit your friend. Haidut posted about there being a possible connection with PUFA and ALS.
PUFA may not being the primary cause of your friends ALS but it’s estrogenic characteristics along with the subsequent inflammatory responses from the body could be a contributing factor.

DMSO could potentially save or reduce the severity of brain and spinal injuries as well.

@Cari, things that oppose COX and LOX, like Aspirin, Vitamin D,K gelatin, glycine etc all are beneficial in opposing PUFA downstream metabolites and eliminating PUFA locked in the tissues as well.

Blocking PUFA metabolism may treat Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS)

@Cari,it appears that vitamin B1 Thiamine might also be of some benefit in ALS patients as well.

Vitamin B1 (thiamine) may treat Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS)

I ran across this article on DMSO today – from the same author that @J.R.L referenced – the Midwest Doctor. This particular article references, among its many benefits, the ability of DMSO to heal eye injury and improve eyesight.
This sounded familiar, so I went back to the RPF and looked at responses to the @haidut chemicals using DMSO as a solvent. Several of the users claimed “expanded Vision” or “Improved vision” after using Defibron, Metergoline and others.
In his article, the Midwest Doctor references the following:
“Many DMSO users have noticed that their vision improved while they used it for something else (e.g., see this, this and this testimonial from a reader here), which in turn inspired physicians to begin applying it to the eyes of patients with vision problems.”
Is it possible the effects on the eyes and expanded vision were do to the DMSO alone?
It sounds like DMSO has minimal, and short term side effects (reversible irritation, burning sensation, vasodilation) that are far outweighed by the benefits. One of them is potential relief from Tinnitus, which I’ve had for a while. Other treatments include, circulatory and neurological disorders (e.g., varicose veins, hemorrhoids, Down Syndrome, Parkinson’s and arthritis. In addition, DMSO by itself is able to increase parasympathetic activity, has strong anti-inflammatory and anti-bacterial properties.
Here’s a partial list of successes:

This is an interesting point on vasodilation @Kevin007. In terms of applying DMSO to the eyes, the product does have the side effect of potentially burning the skin if applied in to high of a concentration. Given the characteristic of being able to absorb through the skin quite efficiently would it be beneficial to blend DMSO in coconut oil and apply to the eye socket or possibly eyelid providing that it does not bleed into the eyes and cause a painful experience.

If DMSO activates the parasympathetic system I wonder if DMSO would raise androgens as well, possibly opposing cortisol, estrogen, serotonin, prolactin etc?
