A Bright Life Inspired by Dr. Raymond Peat
Home › Forums › Forum › Cholesterol. A Midwestern Doctor talks about the con game that is cholesterol
Did Dr Peat ever say what he felt were the main underlying root causes of high cholesterol were @Lollipop ?
Hi J.R.K., good question. No I do not remember. I do remember him saying that PUFA builds up plaque which causes problems and to which cholesterol is traditionally blamed. Would you post it here if you find the answer to your question?
@Lollipop it seems the usual suspects, low magnesium, Vitamin C, and selenium, high PUFA, iron, and stresses causing compensatory gluconeogenesis, as well as mentioning the polyunsaturated fats do indeed lower cholesterol levels, Dr Peat also noted that other toxins have the same effect, yet this is not mentioned by those that market the polyunsaturated fats.
The data that the Russians discovered on cholesterol causing atherosclerosis was based upon a study done on rabbits. Dr Peat did note though that this reaction is exclusive to rabbits when they are fed cholesterol. I would have to wonder then is this data relevant to human health?
Interesting study that show that higher LDL cholesterol is associated with lower mortality in the elderly. I remember Dr Peat saying this years ago that cholesterol was protective.

“The healthy young brain contains a very large amount of cholesterol, almost all in the pure, non-esterified or free form—more than 99.5%, according to Orth and Bellosta (2012, citing Bjorkhem and Meaney, 2004). The aging, degenerating brain contains an increasing amount of esterified cholesterol,”

“…both low and high concentrations of blood cholesterol are associated with immune defects. Most of the people |have talked to who have multiple serious allergies have very low cholesterol levels, and hypothyroid people who are very susceptible to infections usually have high cholesterol,” -Ray Peat

@JRK Re, what were Ray’s thoughts about the cause of high cholesterol. I cannot answer that off the top of my head, either. I would look at his site. Do any of the titles mention cholesterol? There is a search function, but I have found it not great. Second strategy, I would look at the Danny Roddy interviews with Ray on Youtube and see if any mention cholesterol in the summary.
There is a very good article in Expulsia called Cholesterol longevity intelligence and health. @Lilac
Two things came to mind on your query magnesium and selenium both which can be depleted by stress, pharmaceuticals and a lack of seafood in the diet. This might be the single biggest reason that the Mediterranean diet is successful in showing lower levels of atherosclerosis, coronary and cerebral cardiovascular events. Just a thought from my own two cents.
