A Bright Life Inspired by Dr. Raymond Peat
The title: Castor Oil for growing eyebrows and eyelashes? My friend said she is using it and it has helped. She puts a small amount each night on the brows and lashes.
I looked up and the active ingredient is a monounsaturated fatty acid called: ricinoleic acid.
Thoughts? Is it a heavy PUFA or estrogenic plant?
Thank you in advance!
I see many people on Reddit and Quora upset that it matted their hair or made it fall out. I wouldn’t use it just because it pure PUFA, but this gives me concern as well…
”What ricin is. Ricin is a poison found naturally in castor beans. If castor beans are chewed and swallowed, the released ricin can cause injury. Ricin can be made from the waste material left over from processing castor beans.”
I don’t know how anything that is not safe internally can be considered safe on skin. Our skin is our largest organ and is a quicker way to absorb poisons and PUFA straight into the blood stream.
Personally, I wouldn’t touch it. The castor bean does have ricin, but they claim it’s denatured during processing the oil. That may be, but castor oil has traditionally been used as punishment (as the taste is awful), and as a serious laxative, that can cause nausea, vomiting, and seriously unpleasant GI distress. Almost like there is something acutely toxic about it, and the body is trying to rid itself of it as quick as possible.
It’s probably fine in small doses, especially minute amounts topically, but not something I would risk, especially for a small cosmetic upside, like better eyebrows.
Wow…thank you @cari aka “Rince & rePeat” ! I have not used it but was wondering about it from a Pest perspective. I had told her to be aware that it is a PUFA. I wondered if there was some angle with the active ingredient that might salvage it. I work with her and she came to my desk to show me how much it helped her eyebrows. She swears this is the only change she made. I was not convinced but thought I would ask anyway…
WoW, again @Zack Vegas thank you!! I never knew that history of Castor Oil – I obviously need to do my research – lol. I was not going to use it but my work colleague uses it and I got concerned about the PUFA and saw that active ingredient and wondered if it overrode the PUFA toxicity. She swears and came by my desk to show me how much her eyebrows have grown. I have my doubts it wasn’t something else that changed, but she swears nothing else changed. I will try and warn her about the PUFA again…
