What would your recommendations be for someone who struggles with their gut health? What are some examples of things that are the worst for your gut, and some examples of the things that are the best for healing and maintaining your gut health?

      Thank you!!

When I first heard about the raw carrot through Danny Roddy, I did not immediately begin eating it. I never jump into anything right away until I think about it for awhile. After hearing Ray Peat mention it in some interviews I decided to give it a go. It made a big difference in my gut health. I grate a medium carrot and mix in a tsp. of coconut oil and a tsp. of apple cider vinegar and then add a couple pinches of salt. Another thing that seemed to make a difference as well was starting milk again. In regards to the milk, I have tried out whole milk, 2% and 0%. I prefer the 2% milk.

For gut health I am wondering if you might expand upon the issues in which you are experiencing? For example do certain foods irritate your gut, or do you struggle with too slow or to fast transit times?

As @gawdawg mentioned the carrot salad is a good idea for an antibiotic effect to help cleanse the gut, but also if carrot might be a problem then bamboo shoots could be another viable option.

Cascara segrada can also be helpful, as well as Pau D’ Arco can be beneficial. But before going to these options I would look at the foods you are consuming to see if they could be improved in their digestibility by more cooking, or making them more easily digestible, as well as looking at what foods possibly might cause you to have some gut issues.

One simple thing that Anthony Colpo recommended is to separate liquids and solid foods, by at least a half an hour.  This can help to reduce bloating and indigestion, and should result in better food digestion, as you aren’t diluting your stomach acid as much near mealtimes.

It’s a pretty simple thing that can be trialed on in it’s own, or in combination with other methods.

I practice this, and never have liquids with my meals, or before, always after.

Don’t go to sleep on a full stomach. Food not digested is food fermenting and rotting.

Eating bitter things like artichokes and good chocolate before a meal gets the liver and digestive juices going so they are already there and ready. Ray Peat says a piece of fruit about 15 minutes before eating does the same. Drinking coffee AFTER a meal helps with digestion too.
